I discovered yoga after many years of serving in the US Army and dealing with the stressors of Army life memories, wounds and scars. Yoga allowed me to focus on the present and let many of those negative thoughts and feelings slip away.
Once I became a teacher, I knew that I wanted to find a way to share the calm that I had discovered with other female veterans. I was fortunate to find Operation Yogis while I was living in Michigan, and started on a journey to fulfill that dream. It began with 108 sun salutations – and with the help of Operation Injured Soldiers and my friends – grew into the first women-only retreat at the Brave Hearts Estate.
Being able to share my yoga and pour out my heart for a weekend with women that have had similar scars was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I was not aware until that first weekend that so many of us have been holding on to our demons with no real outlet. We laughed we cried and we became friends. Brave Hearts allows us to safely open up and GET REAL with those experiences.
I am proud to have been part of starting these women-only retreats and being a part of Operation Yogis. I'm now living in Pennsylvania, but I'm looking forward to continuing to work with and support Operation Yogis and the Brave Hearts!
